Helsinki Design Week 2026 opens with a theme built around strangers

Helsinki Design Week opens today, August 28, and runs through September 6 under a theme that sounds more like a philosophy seminar than a festival tagline: The Oncoming Other. In its 21st year, the Nordics’ largest design and architecture festival is turning away from products and toward a simpler, harder question: what actually happens when two people cross paths in a city.

What happened

Founder Kari Korkman set out the theme back in March, framing the entire festival around a single observation about urban life: “In urban life we are constantly moving toward one another. What happens in these seemingly random encounters?” From there, the programming is built to interrogate four questions: who is coming toward us, what happens in these meetings, where are we not yet present, and what kind of “encounterers” are we.

Korkman’s reasoning is less about sociology than about how the creative economy actually functions. “The creative sector does not emerge within closed systems but through connections between people, and in networks where ideas, resources and meaning circulate,” he said, adding that the sector’s real breakthroughs tend to happen off to the side of it: “Truly new ideas often emerge in informal contexts; at the margins, across organisational boundaries.”

That logic shapes the program itself. Beyond exhibitions and talks spanning industrial, product, interior, fashion, textile and graphic design, plus architecture and urban planning, the festival runs Open Studios on two Fridays, sending visitors into designers’ actual workspaces rather than finished showrooms, and has expanded its Design Market into something closer to a full “supermarket” of the city’s creative output. An open call for events, discussions and exhibitions closed on June 1, which is how a single curatorial theme ends up spread across hundreds of independently organised events by September.

Why it matters

Most design weeks sell objects: the next chair, the next app, the next material finish. Helsinki is selling something harder to photograph, the conditions that produce those objects in the first place. Korkman’s bet is that a festival’s job isn’t to display finished innovation but to engineer the informal, boundary-crossing collisions that innovation actually comes from, and then to ask attendees to notice their own role in that process rather than just consume it.

What’s next

If the theme lands the way Korkman intends, expect the festival’s open, cross-disciplinary format, open studios instead of trade booths, a market instead of a showroom floor, to keep pulling other European design weeks toward looser, less curated programming built around encounters rather than launches.
