Lego finally gives Mario a real minifigure

Lego finally gives Mario a real minifigure

Nintendo of America has confirmed what brick builders have wanted since 2020: Mario is getting an actual Lego minifigure. A short teaser video posted on X shows him climbing out of a warp pipe in the familiar blocky, hard plastic form Lego has used for Star Wars, Marvel and Harry Potter characters for years, something the Super Mario theme has conspicuously avoided until now.

Lego’s Super Mario line launched in 2020 built around electronic, interactive bricks rather than minifigures, alongside a supersized kart set and a run of pixel art builds inspired by the 8 and 16 bit games. Traditional minifigures never made the cut, even as Lego rolled them out for Nintendo’s Zelda and Animal Crossing lines. That changes on January 1, 2027, when eight new sets go on sale, according to details Lego shared at gamescom this month. Prices run from $9.99 for a small Mario’s Pipe Jump set up to $99.99 for an 850 piece Bowser’s Castle, with Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser Jr. and Koopa Troopa also getting figures. Lego describes it as a “refreshed LEGO Super Mario theme, newly centred on creative LEGO minifigure roleplay action.”

The interactive brick format was a genuine experiment, letting kids trigger sounds and lights as characters moved across a course. It also limited what the sets could be: harder to customize, harder to mix with other Lego themes, and a poor fit for the pose and swap play that drives repeat purchases in licensed toy lines. Minifigures solve that, and they put Mario on the same footing as every other major franchise in Lego’s catalogue, from Batman to Fortnite.

This lands at a strong moment for the character. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie became the first film of 2026 to cross $1 billion at the global box office, and Universal’s Super Nintendo World parks already sell the exact experiences these sets recreate, including Bowser’s Castle and Mario Kart racing. Nintendo has spent years loosening its once tightly controlled approach to licensing, and pairing a proven toy format with a franchise riding a box office high looks less like a delayed fix and more like sequencing: let the movie and the parks build demand, then hand fans a version they can build, pose and collect at home.
