The first Ferrari Luce sold for $40 million (It was a charity)

Chassis 0 of the Ferrari Luce sold for $40 million at RM Sotheby’s in Monterey on Saturday, roughly 36 times its $1.1 million estimate and 66 times what a normal Luce costs.

The full proceeds go to the Ferrari Foundation to rebuild a California school damaged in the 2025 wildfires. A deductible donation changes the arithmetic of bidding. This is a philanthropy result wearing a car auction’s clothes.

Still, the buyer chose this car. The Luce is Ferrari’s first EV, a four-door with 1,035 horsepower and interior and exterior work by Jony Ive’s LoveFrom. Enthusiasts hated it at the Rome launch in May, mostly because it neither looks nor sounds like the badge.

Chassis 0 of any first-in-a-lineage Ferrari was always going to be a trophy. Whether the Luce holds value remains a question.
