Lionel Messi has spent more than two decades leaving defenders behind with movements that seem to make sense only after they have happened. Now some of those runs, turns and dribbles have been transformed into an alphabet.
Following Messi’s retirement from Argentina’s national team, Rexona Argentina has released GOAT Font, a downloadable typeface built from the paths he traced across the pitch during his international career.
The idea takes a familiar kind of football data and gives it an unexpected purpose. Player movements are usually reduced to tactical diagrams, heat maps and lines showing where a run began and ended. Here, those trajectories become typography. A sharp change of direction might form the angle of one character, while a looping dribble becomes the curve of another.

Rather than reproducing Messi’s handwriting or simply putting his name on a commemorative design, the project uses the visual language of his football. The resulting letters feel irregular and kinetic, carrying traces of the hesitation, acceleration and sudden changes of direction that made his movement so recognizable.
Designer Pedro Destefano reportedly combined AI-assisted reconstruction with manual tracing to study the plays before refining their shapes into usable glyphs. The process required a delicate balance. The letters still had to work as typography while retaining enough of their original geometry to feel connected to the moments that inspired them.

Rexona has also left part of the project deliberately unresolved. There is no complete guide identifying which match or play produced every letter. Fans are instead being encouraged to search through old footage and match the shapes themselves, turning the font into a kind of visual puzzle built from more than 20 years of Argentina history.
That mystery has already become part of its appeal. Supporters have begun proposing their own theories about individual letters, comparing curves and turns with famous Messi runs from World Cups and other international matches.
The font is available to download for free, which gives the tribute a life beyond the campaign. Fans can use Messi’s movements to create posters, messages and personal tributes of their own, transforming moments that once lasted only a few seconds on a football pitch into something reusable.

For a player whose career is usually summarized through goals, trophies and records, GOAT Font preserves something harder to quantify.
Messi’s numbers explain how much he achieved. The lines explain how he moved.
