Six things you should never do in Berlin

Six things you should never do in Berlin

Berlin runs on rules nobody prints in a guidebook. Locals learn them by watching, and visitors usually learn them by getting a look, or a lecture, from a stranger. Here are six habits worth dropping before you land.

Don’t go looking for “the” city center

Berlin’s size and its Cold War split mean it never settled on one core. Alexanderplatz anchors the east, Kurfürstendamm anchors the west, and every district beyond them has its own shops, bars and cultural life. Berliners rarely leave their own neighborhood, and once you understand why, the city stops feeling scattered and starts feeling like several cities stitched together.

Don’t throw your empty bottles in the bin

Most bottles and cans in Germany carry a deposit worth 8 to 25 cents. Leaving an empty next to a public bin, rather than inside it, hands that deposit to someone who collects and returns them for a living. It’s an informal economy Berliners protect on purpose, and in parks you’ll often see a collector approach drinkers directly to ask for their empties before they’ve even finished.

Don’t stand on the left side of an escalator

The right side is for standing, the left is for walking. Nobody will shove a tourist who blocks it, Berliners are too unbothered for that, but expect a pointed sigh or a direct request to move.

Don’t eat a döner on public transport

Grilled meat, raw onion and garlic sauce travel fast in an enclosed carriage. Drivers have been known to put riders off buses and trams over it. Finish the kebab on the platform, not on board.

Don’t take photos inside a club

Berlin’s club culture treats the dance floor as a space where nobody performs for a camera. Most venues ban photography outright, and staff enforce it. Leave the phone in your pocket and rely on memory instead.

Don’t take Berliners’ bluntness personally

Berliners complain openly and speak plainly, which visitors sometimes read as rudeness. It rarely is. Show basic consideration and the same directness usually comes back as warmth.

None of these rules are written down anywhere official, which is exactly why getting them right matters. Follow them and you stop reading as a tourist and start moving like someone who actually lives there.
